Not Ordered In

Most companies selling “custom” drapery in San Diego are placing an order with a workroom somewhere else. We cut, sew and finish ours on Silverton Avenue in Miramar, which is why we can talk about fullness and lining rather than just colour — and why a remake is a conversation rather than a claim.

Sheers

Softening the light without losing the outside

San Diego houses open onto their gardens. The problem with a slider is that it is either glaring or covered, and most window coverings make you choose.

Sheer drapery does neither. It diffuses the afternoon glare, hides the neighbours, and still reads as a room that opens to a deck. On a wide opening it also does something a shade cannot — it stacks back to almost nothing when you want the doors open.

Heading Styles

The heading decides how it hangs

Fabric gets all the attention, but the heading is what makes drapery look made rather than bought.

Modern

Ripplefold

A continuous, even S-curve with no pleats at all. Stacks tightly, moves smoothly, and is the right choice for long runs and for anything motorized.

Traditional

Pinch pleat

Two or three fingers of fabric gathered at the top. Structured and formal, and still the most common request for dining and living rooms.

Relaxed

Grommet

Metal rings running directly on the rod. Casual, quick to draw, suits a room with less ceremony.

Layered

Sheer over drapery

Sheers on the front track for daytime glare, opaque panels behind for night. Two tracks, one opening — and on a motor, one button.

The Things That Actually Matter

Fullness, lining, and where it stops

Three decisions separate drapery that looks expensive from drapery that looks thin. None of them is the fabric.

FullnessWe make at 2× to 2.5× the track width. Anything less and the panels hang flat instead of folding — the single most common reason cheap drapery looks cheap.
LiningUnlined, lined, blackout or interlined. In this much sun, lining is not decoration — it is what stops your face fabric fading along one edge within a few summers.
LengthFloat half an inch above the floor, break just touching, or puddle on purpose. We measure and hem on site, because floors are never as level as plans suggest.
FinishingWeighted corners, blind-stitched hems, and steamed on installation so the folds set properly from the first day rather than the third month.

The Process

How a Drapery Order Runs

1

Consultation

We bring fabric books to your house and hold them up in your own light. Fabric looks different on a showroom wall.

2

Measure

Track height, stack space, floor level and how the panels should sit when open. Measured by the person who will hang them.

3

Cut & sew

Made in our Miramar workshop to those measurements. Two to three weeks.

4

Hang & dress

We install the track, hang the panels, program any motors, then steam and dress the folds before we leave.

Questions

Drapery, Answered

How much fabric does a window actually need?

More than most people expect. We make at two to two and a half times the width of the track, so a ten-foot opening takes twenty to twenty-five feet of fabric across. That fullness is what creates the folds — it is the difference between drapery and a flat panel.

Do I need lining in San Diego?

Almost always, yes. There is no off-season here and the sun is on your fabric year round. Lining protects the face fabric from fading, improves how the panels hang, and adds insulation against afternoon heat. Blackout lining is separate again, for bedrooms.

Ripplefold or pinch pleat?

Ripplefold for modern rooms, long runs and anything motorized — it stacks tighter and moves more smoothly. Pinch pleat for traditional rooms and anywhere you want structure at the top. We bring samples of both so you can see them rather than decide from a description.

Can drapery be motorized?

Yes. We fit Somfy Glydea track motors, which handle curtains up to 132 lbs on tracks up to 36 feet, straight or curved. They run on the same remotes, schedules and app as motorized shades, so a room with both operates as one.

Can you match drapery to shades I already have?

Usually. Bring us the shade or tell us what it is and we will work to it — layering sheers or drapery over existing roller shades is one of the most common things we do.

How long does it take?

Most orders are ready to install two to three weeks after measurement.

Do you supply the hardware as well?

Yes — tracks, rods, brackets, finials and motorized track, specified for the weight of the fabric. Drapery failures are usually hardware failures.
