Why San Diego Homes Motorize

Six reasons, and only one of them is the remote

Motorization gets sold as a luxury. In practice, most of our San Diego customers buy it to solve something specific.

01 Windows you cannot reach

A twelve-foot slider, a clerestory above a stairwell, a bank of glass over a fixed sofa. Anything you would need a ladder for is a window you will stop adjusting after the first month.

02 Glare on a schedule

West-facing rooms take the worst of it between four and six. A schedule closes those shades before the room becomes unusable, without anyone being home to do it.

03 Fade protection

San Diego has no off-season. Hardwood, rugs and upholstery take UV twelve months a year. Timed shades protect them on the days you are out, which is when the damage happens.

04 Privacy without the walk-round

Lower every shade in the house from a phone, or set them to drop at dusk. No lap of the ground floor at bedtime.

05 Cooling costs

Closing the west side during the hottest part of the afternoon keeps heat out before the air conditioning has to remove it.

06 No cords at all

Motorized shades have no operating cords, which removes the hazard entirely in rooms used by children.

The Same Window, Two Seconds Apart

This is the opening that sells motorization

Four panels, one span of glass, one command. Doing that by hand means four separate chains and a walk along the whole wall — which is why, on openings like this, hand-operated shades quietly stop being used.

Somfy TaHoma

Your smart home, your way

With the Somfy TaHoma gateway and app you control motorized shades, awnings and screens from your phone — at home or away.

  • “Hey Alexa, open my living room shades.” Works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
  • Morning and bedtime routines that run themselves.
  • Control your shades while you are away — useful when the house should look occupied.
  • Sensors that react to sun, temperature and weather rather than the clock.

What We Fit

The right motor for the opening

Not every window needs the same solution, and the wrong motor is what makes a system noisy, slow or short-lived.

SonesseQuiet motors for roller and solar shades — the workhorse for living rooms and bedrooms.
GlydeaDrapery track motors for curtains on long or curved runs.
WireFree batteryRechargeable lithium motors where running power to the window is not practical.
HardwiredPermanent power for new builds and remodels, specified before the drywall goes up.
Solar poweredA small panel charges the motor — sensible in a climate with this much sun.
Outdoor & patioMotorized exterior screens for patios and pergolas, specified for coastal exposure.

Questions

Motorization, Answered

Do I need wiring for motorized shades?

Usually not. Most of our San Diego retrofits use rechargeable battery motors, which need no electrical work at all — you recharge them roughly once or twice a year depending on use. Hardwired power is worth specifying in a new build or a remodel, while the walls are open.

How long do the batteries last?

On a rechargeable lithium wand, most shades run six months to a year between charges. It depends on the size of the shade and how often it moves — a wide shade cycling twice a day drains faster than a small one you touch now and then. Recharging takes a few hours and you do not have to take the shade down for it.

If there is power near the window, we will usually suggest a plug-in or hardwired motor instead, so the question never comes up again.

Are they loud?

Modern Somfy motors are quiet enough for a bedroom. The Sonesse range is designed specifically for it. Noise is usually a symptom of the wrong motor being used for the weight of the shade — which is a specification problem, not a motorization problem.

Will they work with Alexa or Google Home?

Yes, through the Somfy TaHoma gateway. It also connects to a range of third-party smart home systems. We set this up and test it during installation rather than leaving you with an app to configure.

What happens if a motor fails?

Somfy covers its motors and controls with a five year warranty. Because we are a certified Somfy Expert and we fabricated the shade, we handle the warranty work ourselves instead of sending you to a manufacturer.

Can you motorize shades I already have?

Sometimes, depending on the tube size, the weight and the brackets. It is worth asking, but on older or lightweight shades the cost of retrofitting often approaches replacing them with something specified for a motor from the start.

How long does a custom order take?

Most orders are ready to install two to three weeks after measurement.

Do you motorize drapery as well as shades?

Yes. Somfy Glydea track motors handle curtains, including long and curved runs. Drapery and shades can run on the same remote and the same schedule.
